How the Heart Works

 The Heart as a Pump

The heart is a muscular organ composed of four compartments, chambers, that all work together to pump blood throughout the entire body.

The upper chambers, atria,
located on each side of the heart, receive and collect blood.
The lower chambers, ventricles
, located on each side of the heart, pump the blood.

 Heart's Electrical System
The heart's electrical system is comprised of impulses that travel throughout the heart, also know as the heart's rhythm.

The heart's
natural pacemaker, sinus node
, sets the pace for the heartbeat. The sinus node is a group of specialized cells located in the right atrium. Electrical impulses begin here.

The AV (atrioventricular) node is where the electrical impulses travel from the atria. Each impulse slows down here before it reaches the ventricles.

This electrical impulse travels to the ventricles, which are then stimulated by each impulse.
Each stimulation allows the heart to contract and pump blood.
