Electrical Cardioversion

An electrical cardioversion is a procedure that uses an electrical shock to stop arrhythmias and restore a normal heart rhythm.
This is an effective procedure, but it does not prevent recurring symptoms of atrial fibrillation.

During the Procedure:
During the procedure doctors place several electrode pads on the chest to monitor the patient's heart rhythm. Doctors then use electric shock to convert atrial fibrillation or other arrhythmia to a normal heart rhythm. The patient is usually sedated for this procedure.

After the Procedure:
After the procedure is completed the patient will be observed for a few hours, sometimes overnight, to ensure a stable heart rhythm is maintained.
The patient should not drive for 24 hours if sedation is given.
